Be our guest

Want to visit?

All members of the community are welcome and encouraged to stop by the flying field. Be you curious about model aviation or just want to relax outside and listen to the sounds of a bustling flying field, we’ve got a place to park your car and benches to sit.

Are you a guest pilot?

Interested in flying at Konterra Model Airpark but aren’t a member? No problem. All pilots are encouraged to stop by the flying field when our gates are open and try out our facilities. The best time to stop by the field is on Saturday and Sunday when the weather is pleasant. On weekends the gates are typically open by 8am. When you arrive be sure to find a current FSA member, tell them you are interested in flying at the field as a guest, and ask them to be an ambassador for your visit. This way if you are asked questions, you can refer to the FSA member who is sponsoring your visit. Guest pilots are encouraged to visit our field up to 3 times before being asked to become a member. Your membership helps to support the operations and maintenance of our location and highlights how much you care about model aviation’s continued growth.

As a guest pilot you will be required to have a current year Academy of Model Aeronautics (AMA) membership to fly as a guest at Konterra Model Airpark. A current year AMA membership is required by our land owner and serves to protect your liability in the case of an accident to person or property.

Business owners / military personnel seeking to test equipment

Unfortunately we can not authorize the use of our field for commercial equipment testing or military testing or training.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you allow drones and first-person view (FPV) flying?
  1. We allow any and all types of drone at our field.
  2. FPV (i.e., Fat Shark goggles) may not be used to pilot any aircraft of any type.

All flights at our field must be conducted using natural, un-aided line of sight. Wearing any device over your eyes in order to pilot a vehicle, is prohibited.

Do I need to register with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to fly at your location?

Yes. Federal law requires all recreational fliers ( i.e., hobbyists) to register with the FAA and get a unique I.D. that they must affix to all of their aircraft. You can learn more about the rules at the FAA’s Recreational Fliers & Modeler Community-Based Organizations webpage.

Do I need to be Part 107 Certified to fly a drone at your field?

No. Part 107 Certification applies only if an individual is operating a drone for work or business purposes. Since Free State Aeromodelers operates as a Charter Club under the Academy of Model Aeronautics (AMA) we fly for hobby or recreational purposes and follow a community-based set of safety guidelines.

I’m a business owner or in the military seeking to test my equipment can I fly at your location?

No. We can not authorize the use of our field for equipment testing or military training.

Why do I have to be a member of the Academy of Model Aeronautics (AMA)?

The AMA provides our club members the insurance needed to fly at our field. This insurance protects the club, its members, and most of all you. But it’s just not an insurance policy, it’s an open invitation to events all across the U.S. and to resources the AMA provides its members.

I have an AMA Park Pilot Program membership. Can I use that to join Free State Aeromodelers?

Absolutely! And please keep in mind that Park Pilot membership allows you to only fly aircraft that are considered park sized at our field (2 pounds, 60 mph max speed, no internal combustion engine). So once you exceed any Park Pilot limitations (e.g., you want to fly a glow powered aircraft) you must become an AMA Full (Open) Member. For more details visit the AMA website’s Membership Options page.
